Geographical Timeline
Geographical boundaries of states and districts in India have evolved over time, with changes such as splits, mergers, or renaming. These alterations complicate the creation and maintenance of accurate time-series data, as regions may have different economic indicators before and after such changes. CMIE addresses this issue by assigning a unique region-id to each administrative division and creating a Geographical Time-line to track changes.

About CMIE - States of India
The State of India database provides comprehensive statistics and reports on the socio-economic conditions of Indian states. This database is created and maintained by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) and utilizes open reports from both central and state governments to compile its datasets.
The database covers 18 key topics, including State Domestic Product, Inflation, Banking, Public Finance, Agriculture, Energy Infrastructure, Industry, Investments, Corporate Sector, Trade, Consumer Sentiments, Employment & Wages, Population, Demography and Households, Education, Health, Crime and Election. To learn more about the datasets under each topic, please visit the ‘Datasets’ section of this guide.
The database’s interface is user-friendly and intuitive. It allows users to easily download data with just a few clicks and offers various search strategies to help researchers select the data they want. Users can choose their preferred search strategy based on the amount of data they wish to download.
The database is divided into four main sections:
Statistics: This section presents data in tables with features like ‘search text and filter data’, ‘multi-column sort’, ‘download as Excel’, ‘add to Favourite Report Set’, ‘add to Data & Alert Set with email updates’, and ‘Indicators in the Report’ to assist researchers with analysis.
Document: This section provides detailed information about the sources CMIE uses for each topic. Researchers can view and download these original reports.
Tidings: This section shares daily news and updates related to the 18 topics, sourced from external outlets like newspapers, magazines, and government websites. The sources for these updates are clearly referenced.
Analysis: This section features analytical articles written by the CMIE team on the various topics covered in the database.

Follow Datasets, Tidings, and Analysis
Researchers can set up 'Mail Alerts' for the data tables they wish to track by selecting 'Send mail alert on update' from the toolbar. After doing so, they will receive an email notification whenever new data is added to the table. Please watch the video for more details.
Researchers can also set up mail alerts for analytical articles and tidings. This feature allows researchers to receive updates for one or more specific states.

Announcements
Researchers can view all recent updates regarding newly added features and datasets in this section. CMIE publishes an article for each update and includes it in this section.
Support-Seek Clarification
Researchers can seek clarification regarding the operation and content of the State of India through this section. An agent from CMIE will then contact them to address and clarify any doubts.

Extracting Data from the 'Statistics' Section
This method of data extraction is simpler than other methods. Researchers should first select their state of interest and then navigate to the 'Statistics' section. From there, they can choose a topic or dataset from the dropdown list. Once selected, a table will appear, which can be downloaded and saved. Please refer to the video guide below.
The limitation of this search method is that researchers can only view or work with one part of the dataset at a time.

Extracting Data from SOIdx
This method is used for bulk data extraction, allowing researchers to create datasets with up to 50,000 combinations of Region and ‘Indicator.
The first step is to create an indicator set. Begin by selecting a topic and navigating to the 'Indicator in this chapter' section. Click on 'Add to Set' to include a particular dataset in the indicator set. Multiple datasets can be added to a single indicator set. Please refer to the video below:
Once the ‘indicator set’ is ready, go to the ‘Request Data’ option under the ‘Extract Data’ menu. From there, select one or more regions under the ‘Regions' option. Then, choose the previously created ‘indicator set’ from the dropdown list. After filling in the timeline/date format, click on ‘Save Specification and Extract Data’. Once the dataset is generated, you can locate and download it from the ‘Specifications & Requests’ section. Please refer to the video below:

Extract data using Excel plugin
The Excel Add-in allows researchers to directly extract data for selected indicators into their Excel spreadsheets. The key advantage of this method is that it enables users to extract data multiple times into the same sheet (without needing to return to the web database), either by using the same parameters or by modifying the parameters in the syntax.
